YouTube Google Lose Major Advertisers

Despite having one of the best (allegedly) AI engines, Google and YouTube just haven’t been able to stop insidious comments on YouTube kids videos.

This has cost them global advertisers and a big chunk of revenue, and has spurred them into action.

It’s amazing how companies will generally only act if it affects their hip pocket.

How to Migrate a Website and Improve Traffic and Rankings

I’ve never believed that SEO migrations cause traffic and rankings drops.

If you approach and execute your SEO website migration correctly and well, you are likely to increase traffic and rankings. I’ve done it numerous times for big websites and small ones.

Generally, the bigger the technical cruft, the bigger the uptick you might see, if you can resolve the issues.

Read this tutorial to find out how to do it.

Net Neutrality Threatens Internet

Welp, it looks like Net Neutrality has gone out of the window for US ISPs.

This is to the detriment of the internet, and will result in poorer service, increased prices, more advertising and increased costs for advertisers.

It’s not beyond the realms of possibilities that Bing (that small, unused search engine) could even pay to be in the fast lane.

Could Google Use Direct Traffic SEO Ranking Factor

SEMRush caused a bit of a stir when they released their SEO Ranking Factors Study 2017.

The big headline conclusion was that Direct Traffic was the biggest factor in SEO rankings.

Unsurprisingly, this caused a bit of a furore and wild shouts of correlation does not equal causation.

After stopping to think about it, I started to wonder *how* Google would go about using Direct Traffic as a ranking factor, and this post is where it led me.

Google To Crack Down on AMP Spammers

In a continuation of the traditional cat & mouse game of search, Google is about to put a stop to those sites which put teaser content up on AMP pages, rather than the same content as the canonical URL.

Oddly, they are giving three month’s notice of the change.

Possibly this is because some of the offenders are their new best mates, the big news publishers.

A Python Script To Check Canonical Domain Redirects

So, I got really bored and frustrated checking a bunch of domains for a client to see if their domains 301 redirected all variants from http to https and from non-www to www. There are only so many times you can type:

curl -I

Using my limited knowledge of Python, I crafted this simple little script to do the leg work for me and report back its findings in a readable format which can be slapped straight into an email that even devs can understand (j/k).

Reviews Most Important Local SEO Ranking Factors

Honestly, you wait ages for a major SEO Ranking Factors study and then two come along at once: this one is a good one on Local SEO Ranking Factors.

Somewhat unsurprisingly, it finds that Reviews (and websites!) are the most important local SEO Ranking Factors. It’s not quite as contentious as another recent study…

Google No Manual Action No Disavow

Well now. Disavowing links is a thorny issue, and Gary Illyes has waded right in there.

Google is now saying you don’t really need to spend your time submitting link disavow files to Google unless you’ve got a Manual Action from the webspam team. Unsurprisingly, some webmasters disagree. Often they have built services on disavowing links.

Google Fewer Strong Pages Better Than Many Weak Ones

I’m not surprised John Mueller from Google has weighed in on the page bloat issue with a comment that “often few strong pages > many weak ones”.

Google would love to have fewer pages to find, crawl, index and rank. It would make Google’s life so much more…. efficient.

We may be about to have another round of page bloat vs content bloat. Don’t forget he said “often”.

Twitter Doubles Tweet Length to 280 Characters

Who doesn’t love Twitter?

That rambunctious well of pithy brevity and censorious outrage has just doubled tweet length, causing social media marketers to urgently rewrite six-month’s worth of tweets which were calendared in Hootsuite.

There are other things you need to do. Read the post for key actions and follow me on Twitter: @BelmoreDigital.

Yelp Review Solicitation Crackdown

I’m really not sure about Yelp’s hardline stance on review solicitation.

I think it runs the risk of causing honest operators to sink down the Yelp listings, wile letting the spammers surf the line between right and wrong.

If you are a local business soliciting Yelp reviews, you’d better be aware of this development.
