Instagram wants to edit your videos, PMax is doing its own thing again, your conversion metrics are lying, robots.txt won’t save you, and WhatsApp is the new ad frontier. This week’s theme? The tools are shifting, the data’s confusing, and Meta still wants your entire marketing funnel.

Free Edits: Instagram’s Not-So-Subtle CapCut Clone
It’s giving CapCut, but from Meta.
Instagram is reportedly developing a standalone video editing app aimed at creators looking for more control without switching platforms. Think CapCut-style functionality, but baked into Meta’s ecosystem. Read more.
Meta’s goal here is fairly clear: keep creators, and therefore eyeballs, inside its ecosystem. If creators are using Meta tools to create and distribute content, that’s one less step to TikTok, YouTube, or any third-party app with better editing functionality. It’s not revolutionary — it’s defensive. But it might still work.
If you or your brand rely on Reels or Stories, this is one to keep tabs on. Testing early often gives you a bit of algorithmic love, plus it helps avoid paying for third-party tools when free (and native) ones are decent. But tread carefully: not all free tools are created equal — especially when they’re also the platform pushing the content.
This kind of platform-driven content creation ties closely to Belmore Digital’s Social Media Management services. If you’re spending too much time trying to keep up with every app update, book a chat and let us manage it while you focus on growing the business.

Performance Max: Still Magic, Still a Mystery

A new report shows just how embedded Performance Max (PMax) is in ecommerce these days. Higher spend, better ROAS (allegedly), and more automation than ever. But under the hood, it’s still a black box. Google says it’s working. Your numbers say it’s working. But you still don’t know why it’s working. Read more.
This is Google at its most “just trust us.” The automation is powerful — no denying that. But the lack of transparency is frustrating, particularly for marketing managers trying to optimise across multiple campaigns or justify budget increases. If it works, great. But when it doesn’t, you’re left with very little diagnostic information.
If you’re running ecommerce, you need to use PMax — but you also need to test alongside it. Run branded campaigns, retargeting, or product-specific ads to see what happens outside the PMax silo. And make sure your conversion tracking and analytics are bulletproof. Otherwise, you’re optimising based on vibes.
PPC and Paid Social is one of our core services — we’ve been through every iteration of Google’s ad systems. If you’re confused by PMax (you’re not alone), let’s talk strategy, structure, and performance.
Conversion Metrics Are Up. Sales Are Not. Explain That.
Your reports look amazing. CTR is up. Conversion rate is brilliant. But the sales chart? Flatline. Dig into that disconnect, listing reasons why good-looking conversion numbers don’t always equal business results. From misaligned KPIs to shallow conversions (like newsletter signups), it’s a reminder that marketing metrics are only useful if they lead somewhere. Read more.
It’s not always that the marketing is bad — it’s that the reporting is off. Conversions might be misattributed, goals might be set up poorly, or sales teams might be dropping the ball. But if you’re only measuring what’s easy to track, rather than what matters, then of course the sales aren’t there.
This is your nudge to audit your conversion goals and attribution models. Make sure you’re tracking actions that actually affect revenue — not just traffic or micro-conversions. And talk to sales. If your team is handing over “leads” that never close, maybe they’re not really leads.
Conversion issues are best addressed with CRO and Analytics expertise. If your funnel’s working on paper but not in your bank account, let’s have a proper look under the hood.

Robots.txt Still Isn’t SEO Magic, Sorry

The gatekeeper of your site’s secrets – misunderstood, again.
Google’s John Mueller reminded SEOs that robots.txt won’t boost rankings — it simply tells bots where not to go. That means crawler-blocked pages are still indexed if they’re linked elsewhere, and robots.txt doesn’t magically “optimise” your site. Read more.
Every few years we go through a collective forgetting of how basic SEO works. Blocking isn’t boosting, folks.
Double-check your robots.txt file — and make sure you’re using it to prevent unnecessary crawling, not trying to hide or boost things that need better content or links — also, our Development and Technology can help.
WhatsApp Business Messaging Gets a Power-Up
New inbox controls + ads to past contacts. What could go wrong?
Meta just added new tools to manage business chats in WhatsApp, along with a feature to let businesses serve ads to users they’ve previously chatted with. On the surface, it’s all about convenience — but it’s also a big nudge toward monetising direct messaging. Read more.
These changes are aimed at helping businesses better manage inboxes and drive conversions — ideally without annoying customers.
It’s clever. Businesses already have warm leads in their WhatsApp inbox. Now they can retarget those people directly via ads, which is powerful… if used responsibly. But it’s also a slippery slope. If users feel like they’re being spammed, they’ll drop off quickly — and you won’t get them back.
If WhatsApp is part of your customer comms stack, it’s time to formalise it. Think about automation, message templates, and how to integrate the platform into your broader CRM. Just don’t get too spammy. This isn’t email — the expectation for relevance and immediacy is much higher.
If you’re looking to integrate messaging apps into your marketing, our Email & CRM services now include WhatsApp workflows. Let’s talk about how to use this powerful tool without turning into that brand.

Annnd That’s a Wrap
This week, we’ve seen platforms expanding their grip, data playing tricks, and marketers needing to stay sharp just to keep up. Whether it’s Meta trying to edit your videos and message your customers, Google keeping its ad magic under lock and key, or your own reports quietly fibbing to you — there’s always something demanding a second look.
If any of this raised a flag for your campaigns, your reporting, or even your inbox, now’s the time to take action — before it becomes next quarter’s headache.
As always, if you’re ready to make sense of it all and get your digital strategy working properly (without needing to guess what PMax is doing), get in touch. Let’s cut through the nonsense and get you back to results.
Until next time,
JB
