Knowledge Panels Gain From Featured Snippets

Oh noes! Poor Featured Snippets have been giving way really bland Knowledge Panels.

Re-arranging the deck chairs on a well-know boat springs to mind.

If you rely on crowd-sourced content, you are always going to find a fair degree of rubbish in it.

Putting it in a Knowledge Panel is like putting lipstick on a pig.

Could Google Use Direct Traffic SEO Ranking Factor

SEMRush caused a bit of a stir when they released their SEO Ranking Factors Study 2017.

The big headline conclusion was that Direct Traffic was the biggest factor in SEO rankings.

Unsurprisingly, this caused a bit of a furore and wild shouts of correlation does not equal causation.

After stopping to think about it, I started to wonder *how* Google would go about using Direct Traffic as a ranking factor, and this post is where it led me.

Google Posts Impacts Local Rankings

I’m coming round to Google Posts & have been recommending clients try them for a while.

I think it’s an interesting outcome that using Google Posts currently appears to give you a minor local ranking boost. I wouldn’t expect this to last long however.

Just one more reason to give them a go, especially if you run specials, or any events.

Google Doesn't Use Click Tracking

Gah! Okay, so now I’m frustrated.

Google this week saying they DON’T use click data for search rankings goes against what another Googler said a week or so ago.

Unfortunately, this is a perfect example of the confusion caused by Google’s reps saying anything, ever. They get trapped by out-of-context dissection of the minutiae of what they say, and everyone ends up confused.

Follow the link to read about this week’s version of the click-data / rankings argument.

Google Local Possum Update Reversed

I love it when a Google update rolls back and people get re-listed.

A year after rolling out, the Google Local Possum Update has reversed for a bunch of filtered businesses.

If you’re still affected then you need to do something about it, now don’t you? *cough* virtual offices.

Read all about it in this extract from TWIS SEO News & Updates 08 Sept 2017.

How To Do SEO Website Migrations Properly

I’ve been listening to various SEOs and webmasters recently espousing how they do SEO Site Migrations and how they worry because they normally lose rankings and traffic for a while.

I don’t understand that. I’ve done a large number of site migrations and I have never lost traffic or rankings – not once.

In fact, the usual state of affairs is that I have gained traffic and rankings.

This tutorial covers how I do it, with an Excel checklist into the bargain.
