Code Cutting To Improve Page Speed

2017-11-11T07:45:21+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , |

I think we all know that Page Speed is important, and that there are multiple ways to achieve it. This is a really interesting take from Ian Lurie of Portent on trimming code bloat to get a faster page speed score from Google's tool. It's not the complete answer, but streamlined code is always worthwhile, providing it is scalable. Read more in this extract from TWIS SEO News & Updates 3rd November 2017. #SEO #SEONews #PageSpeed

Google Gary’s SMX AMA

2017-11-11T07:33:58+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

Gary Illyes from Google spent a while at SMX doing an interesting, and extended, AMA session. He covered quite a bit of ground including linking & mentions, Mobile First Indexing, JavaScript, and the perils of disavowing links. Google Wants To Drop Structured Data

2017-11-09T19:47:20+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

Just when you've started to get your head round Structured Data, Google wants to do without it. (That doesn't mean you shouldn't use it, you should). Eventually, Google's dream is to have flexible enough algorithms to be able to properly deconstruct and reconstruct the data trapped in all our web pages and apps. Using AI. All good fun, but a long way away yet. #SEO #SEONews #StructuredData #JSON #RichSnippets

Google Posts Impact Rankings

2017-11-09T07:07:25+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

I'm coming round to Google Posts & have been recommending clients try them for a while. I think it's an interesting outcome that using Google Posts currently appears to give you a minor local ranking boost. I wouldn't expect this to last long however. Just one more reason to give them a go, especially if you run specials, or any events. Google Releases New Curvy Mobile Results

2017-11-07T21:21:37+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

Google has gone all curvy with its new mobile layout. It's a pretty big look and feel update, but not a major change to SERP. I haven't got the stats one way or another, but I would estimate that the "boxed" design mean click gravitate towards the top of the listings. Direct Bookings Now Available Through Google My Business

2017-11-03T09:51:34+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

Although frustrating that this is US only, local businesses being able to take bookings direct from search is fantastic. This means local businesses can take at least 1 or 2 clicks out of the funnel, which almost always improves revenue and conversions. Hopefully, it'll go global soon. Google Launches Mobile Payments

2017-11-03T09:24:06+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , , |

At long last, Google is getting in on the Mobile Payment action to make our lives easier, and to enable us to buy more stuff, lifting revenue & conversions on the way hopefully. This will work across Android and Chrome and is similar to Apple Pay & Samsung Pay. Unfortunately many retailers and still make purchases difficult to transact via your mobile device - too many form fields! Google’s Mobile First Index Live For a Few Sites

2017-11-03T09:13:11+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

I'm kind of enjoying this approach from Google, of slowly rolling out the Mobile First Index. Don't scare the horses springs to mind. I think we'll see it gather pace in the next few months, once teething issues are ironed out, but it will still take a very long time for the Mobile First Index to roll out fully, if it ever does. Google Makes International Searches Harder

2017-11-02T10:36:14+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

I love change and convenience, but not all changes are convenient, and not all make life better. This is one of them, as Google makes searching outside of your country a bit harder and more of a faff to do. Settings changes are the order of the days rather than just heading to google.cc.tld. Google Says Pruning Content Doesn’t Work For Panda

2017-11-01T09:25:55+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , , |

I'm pleased Google has knocked content pruning on its head. It doesn't work for lifting Panda algorithmic filtering due to low quality content. Instead, you should be working on improving your content quality. I've always been against removing content. Glad to know I was right. Food Ordering Comes To Facebook

2017-10-28T20:23:32+11:00Categories: SEO News, Social Media|Tags: , , , |

I kinda like the thought that I can order my dinner through Facebook (if I was in the US). Although, I'm not so sure I want Facebook knowing what I have for dinner - that's Insta, so maybe the same thing, ultimately. Facebook is continuing its slow turn into WeChat. It has way more users, but much less "complete life" functionality. It must wish it could own that much data about its users. New SiteLinks Format Being Tested By Google

2017-10-27T21:11:43+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , |

The numerous shades of blue company is at it again, testing new SiteLinks layouts which look suspiciously like they are Mobile First ones. You think anything may be in the offing? I wonder if single-column, left-aligned, link lists have worked for any big companies in the past. Hmmm. Mobile first AND retro in one fell swoop. Googlebot Doesn’t Crawl HTTP/2

2017-10-26T21:37:39+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , |

Despite championing HTTP/2 and the speed advantages that come with it, googlebot doesn't crawl pure HTTP/2 connections, or so it seems. It's a bit arcane and technical, but it's also a bit surprising. Read more in this extract from TWIS SEO News & Updates w/e 20th October 2017. #SEO #SEONews #Googlebot #Crawling #HTTP2

Google Adds & Swiftly Removes Mini-Cupcake Calorie Tracking

2017-10-25T22:01:25+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , |

Naturally, I am up in arms about Google unintentionally offending people by measuring calories burned for walking distances in terms of mini-cupcakes. My pitchfork is sharpened and ready to prod. This incident shows that every now and again, tests out in the wild can go awry and end in unforeseen results. Or tears in this case. Move fast and upset people, maybe? #SEO #SEONews #ProductTesting #GoogleMaps

Google My Business Posts API Added

2018-10-17T16:53:35+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I'm really pleased that Google has finally added Posts to the GMB API. It makes them useful at last. It's partly due to the way of rolling out projects, and partly due to Google being a bit silly at times. Either way, I think these Google Posts have a real opportunity to help webmasters gain more SERP real estate, and increase click-throughs and action.
