What an exciting AI filled week it’s been. Just like many other weeks recently. Some brands are now blocking GPTBot (until offered cash, no doubt), Lyft is slapping ads into its app, Meta is being useful, Google is actually stopping UA processing (sniff), and there’s been another Google Core Update to pontificate over. Interested? Dive in for more.

Happy New Year! So nice to be back in 2023, where everything is.... broadly the same: Meta has been fined by the EU, Google is fiddling with Ads, webmasters don't understand crawling, AI is taking over and Google Reviews love pictures. Let's get into it shall we?

Google Dumping AJAX JavaScript Crawling Scheme

2023-12-05T17:54:09+11:00Categories: SEO News, Technology & Development|Tags: , , , , , , |

What’s this about Google, Ajax and JavaScript?  Hooray! At long last Google is dumping escaped fragment URLs. JavaScript developers the world over can breathe a sigh of relief. Unless they ignored Google’s warning two years ago that they were going to End of Life it. [...]

Python SEO URL Checker for Canonicals & Redirects

2018-10-17T16:58:09+11:00Categories: SEO, SEO Tools|Tags: , , , , , |

So, I got really bored and frustrated checking a bunch of domains for a client to see if their domains 301 redirected all variants from http to https and from non-www to www. There are only so many times you can type: curl -I http://domain.com Using my limited knowledge of Python, I crafted this simple little script to do the leg work for me and report back its findings in a readable format which can be slapped straight into an email that even devs can understand (j/k). #SEO #SEOTools #Python #CanonicalURLs #Redirects

Google My Business Posts API Added

2018-10-17T16:53:35+11:00Categories: SEO News|Tags: , , , , , , , , , |

I'm really pleased that Google has finally added Posts to the GMB API. It makes them useful at last. It's partly due to the way of rolling out projects, and partly due to Google being a bit silly at times. Either way, I think these Google Posts have a real opportunity to help webmasters gain more SERP real estate, and increase click-throughs and action. Well, Google is keen to give us teasers over the looming Mobile First Index. They are not complete answers, but are certainly pointers in the right direction. If you're not prepared for the Mobile First Index, you will be in for a shock, even though Google is planning on softening the blow as much as possible. Read more in this extract from TWIS SEO News & Updates w/e 08 Sept 2017. Mobile First Index: Hidden Content will be fine says Google

2018-11-13T15:30:25+11:00Categories: SEO, SEO News, Technology & Development|Tags: , , , , , |

Google has claimed that hidden content will be fine under the looming Mobile First Index. I can't see it working for search rankings, but, as I say in this post, if that is the case, then welcome to spam land. If you would like to discuss ways to check your website and get it Mobile First ready, then please feel free to contact me. #SEO #MobileFirst #MobileStrategy

Mobile First Index Will Be A Staged Rollout

2018-11-13T15:22:49+11:00Categories: SEO, SEO News|Tags: , , , , , , |

So, Google will be rolling out its Mobile First Index to individual sites in a staged rollout. This is such a slowly, slowly approach, that you can't help but wonder if the project is stalling, or if the change will be so substantial it will be earth-shattering for search results, even though Google is PR-heavy on the "nothing substantial will change" message. Read about it now. You need to get your site Mobile First ready, as being mobile friendly is just not enough. If you would like to discuss ways to become Mobile First, or check current status, please feel free to contact me. #SEO #MobileFirst #MobileSearch #MobileStrategy

Google Gives Incorrect 301 Redirect Advice

2023-12-05T18:32:54+11:00Categories: SEO|Tags: , , , , , |

Wow. Google gave some incorrect 301 redirect advice, which you can read in this post. It centres around redirecting 404s and speaks from a Google perspective, rather than a webmaster / user perspective.  If you would like to discuss the ways you should implement 301 redirects and the impact not doing them could have on your web business, please feel free to contact me. #SEO #Redirects #SiteMigrations #TechnicalSEO
